B Corporation

Does the mark above look familiar? It’s likely on the back of the cheese you buy, the dish soap, maybe even a clothing label or two. The “B” in B Corp stands for Benefit, and in order to display this emblem, businesses must undergo a rigorous third-party assessment of their impact on governance, workers, community, environment, and customers.

South Mountain first qualified as a B Corp in 2008, and since then, we’ve been consistently ranked in the top five out of 10,000 companies across 120 countries! To put those numbers into perspective, here’s how our impact score stacks up against big-name brands you likely know and love:

  1. Dr. Bronner's (206.7)
  2. South Mountain Company (189.4)
  3. Patagonia (166)
  4. Toms (126.7)
  5. Seventh Generation (114.5)
  6. Bombas (103.1)
  7. Ben & Jerry's (96)
  8. Stoneyfield Organic (93.1)
  9. Athleta (91.9)
  10. Cabot Creamery (85.6)

A Closer Look at What We Do (and How We Do It)

1. Governance

We’re a democratically run, worker-owned cooperative. After five years, employees are eligible to buy in and become owners. As owners, they share in both decision-making and profits!

Why We’re Speaking Up

For a long time, we didn’t talk much about our B Corp ranking. It felt a little... unhumble. But the world has changed. In this moment, silence can be misread as indifference. And we’ve realized that sharing how we do business helps others do it too. Furthermore, clients are hungry for this kind of information. They want to work with companies that align with their values. They want to vote with their dollars for the kind of world they want to live in. And when they find out that one of the top-ranked B Corps on the planet is right here on Martha’s Vineyard? Let’s just say, it’s a delightful surprise. We also love telling them that MV’s only other B Corp—Martha’s Vineyard Bank—is hot on our heels with a score of 103.7! We’re glad the bar keeps rising. It challenges us to keep learning, evolving, and showing up better—for our team, our clients, and our community. And that’s exactly the kind of race we want to be in.
