When MV Shipyard reached out about adding solar to their Vineyard Haven campus, they had one pressing question: could the panels withstand seagulls dropping clams on them? To find out, we staged a "clam slam"—dropping bushels from a height. Littlenecks, cherrystones, and steamers passed with flying colors. Quahogs caused a few cracks, but luckily, gulls can't lift them.

Why go solar?

Solar reduces your electric bills, protects you from rising rates, and helps the environment. It’s a smart investment that supports local energy independence and creates jobs here on Martha’s Vineyard.

What is a solar PV system — and how does net metering work?

A typical solar PV (photovoltaic) system includes:

- Solar panels to capture sunlight
- An inverter to convert that into usable electricity
- Monitoring to track performance and savings
- (Optional) battery storage or EV charging integration

Net metering credits you for extra energy sent to the grid, which helps offset future electric bills throughout the year.

What type of panels do you install?

We install high-efficiency Qcell panels — durable and reliable, with manufacturing capacity in the US.

What if I need a new roof after going solar?

We handle removal and reinstallation. You coordinate with your roofer, and we take care of the rest.

Where does the solar electricity go?

Solar energy powers your home first. Extra energy goes to the grid, automatically earning you net metering credits.

Will my solar store energy?

Not by default. Standard systems are grid-tied. If you want backup power, we can add a battery to enable you to store and use your solar energy anytime.

Can I add an EV charger to my solar system?

Yes! We can install a Level 2 charger so you can power your EV with clean solar energy. Incentives may be available to reduce the cost.

Does South Mountain offer solar leases?

Not currently. We focus on ownership because it provides the greatest long-term savings, full control, and access to all available incentives. If that changes in the future, we may offer leasing again.

Is solar attainable for low- to moderate-income households?

Yes. Incentives like those from Cape Light Compact make solar more affordable. We’re happy to help you explore options and apply.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. We can connect you with low- or no-interest loan programs to help make solar accessible without upfront cost.

Will I get a check from the government for the 30% tax credit?

No. It’s a tax credit, not a rebate. It reduces what you owe in taxes. The residential credit expires after 2025. The commercial credit continues, with restrictions, through 2029.

Are there state tax credits for solar in Massachusetts?

Yes. Homeowners may receive up to $1,000 in state tax credits for solar installed on a primary residence. Ask your tax advisor to confirm eligibility.

What are net metering credits worth?

If your inverter is 10kW AC or less, credits are worth full retail value. Larger systems receive about 60% of that value.

What maintenance does a solar system require?

Solar systems need little maintenance. Check your monitoring portal monthly and inspect for visible issues like debris on the panels or critters nesting.

Will my system rust or corrode near the ocean?

No. We use anodized aluminum and stainless-steel hardware designed to resist corrosion in coastal environments.

What is South Mountain’s warranty?

We provide 25-year panel and optimizer warranties, 12-year inverter coverage, 5-year labor warranty, and free monitoring for the life of the system.

What happens to the panels at the end of their life?

We remove and ship them to a certified recycler. Over 90% of panel materials are recovered and reused.

What about batteries?

Batteries store solar energy for use at night or during outages. They can also qualify for incentives and support the grid through programs like ConnectedSolutions.

What size battery do I need?

Most homes need enough storage to run critical loads (like lights and refrigeration) for 8–12 hours. We’ll help size your system to match your needs.

Will a battery power my whole house?

Not typically. Most systems are sized for essentials like lights and refrigeration. Full-home backup requires multiple batteries and higher cost.
