1. Install enough solar to offset the entire property's electrical load with battery back-up.
2. Design and build an “art barn” that is a work of art itself.
3. Create a flexible layout to support a wide range of programming.
4. Minimize impact.
The space was commissioned as an "art barn" in 2015. In 2022, the patron and several other generous donors, made it possible for Sitillpoint Martha's Vineyard, Inc to purchase the buildiing, opening its doors to the public in 2024.
Equal parts sculpture and infrastructure, this versatile barn quietly anchors the Stillpoint campus. Its low-slung silhouette and southern orientation are precisely calibrated to support a 35kW rooftop solar array, marrying form and function in service of sustainability.
Inside, exposed scissor trusses and raw structural elements conjure the reverent atmosphere of a cathedral. Sunlight filters through a ridge skylight and cupola, illuminating a tactile palette of reclaimed fir and redwood.
Spanning over 3,100 square feet, the space was initially designed for flexibility - shifting effortlessly between art gallery, concert hall, and event space, with room for a woodworking shop and greenhouse.
A built-in bar and integrated restrooms provide comfort and flexibility, and oversized redwood doors spill out onto bluestone patios framed by extended roofs, an orchard, and gardens.
