Aaron Barbatti

Solar Installer

Born and raised in Chattanooga, Aaron started out as a video engineer producing events for the likes of Hilary Duff, Tyler Perry and OneRepublic. In 2023, he transitioned his technical skills to South Mountain Solar. When he's not on the roof, you can find Aaron catch-and-release fishing or with his partner and three kids on Abel's Hill.

Shawn Barber

Carpenter

After 11 years at the famed Penikese Island School, during which he earned a Master’s in Special Education, Shawn settled here to play music and hone his woodworking and carpentry skills. Playing stand up bass, Shawn founded Good Night Louise and has written a catalog of original music. When Shawn isn't working, you can find him doing a crossword puzzle with his wife or riding bikes with his son.

Rocco Bellebuono

Construction Lead

Rocco joined South Mountain in 2005, bringing deep experience in timber framing, woodworking, and stereotomy. He’s led some of our most complex residential and community projects, including Camp Jabberwocky and the MV Community Services campus. A long-time member of the Timber Framers Guild, Rocco is earning a professional certificate from the School of Practical Stereotomy. He lives on Martha’s Vineyard with his family and still loves the sharpness of a well-tuned chisel.

Deirdre Bohan

CEO

Deirdre spent childhood summers in Vineyard Haven. After graduating from Brown with a degree in Computer Science, she joined our team in 1995. She served as our bookkeeper, founder of our interiors department, COO, and chair of our Management Committee and Leadership Team before becoming CEO in 2023. Like many of us, she has overwhelming gratitude for this company. Deirdre lives with her husband, son, and enthusiastic Australian Shepherd in a restored Oak Bluffs bungalow.

Ryan Bushey

Director of Architecture

Ryan came to South Mountain via Steve Sinnett—one of the original SMCo owners—with a passion for "green building". Twenty years later, he directs the Architecture Department and leads Community collaborations with organizations such as MV Community Services. Ryan holds a degree in architecture from the Wentworth Institute of Technology and is a registered architect in Massachusetts.

Eric Cady

Assistant Construction Lead

Eric worked as a millworker, graphic designer, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor before answering South Mountain’s call for a carpenter in 2022. A lover of craft, natural materials, and lifelong learning, he is grateful to have found a community that shares his values and vision. When not at work, Eric can be found painting, sculpting wood, or enjoying nature alongside his wife and pets.

Chris Carroll

Solar Designer

Chris Carroll grew up in Chilmark and still enjoys boating with friends and family in the waters around Menemsha. With a background in construction, land surveying, and engineering, he’s excited to be part of a team designing solar solutions for our local energy needs. After work he relaxes by playing music, catching up with friends, or walking trails with his wife and two daughters.

Tim Clark

Architectural Designer

Tim grew up in Harwich, the son of a landscape designer and a lavender farmer. He attended Boston College, and then he worked as their Sports Information Director before pursuing a career in architecture. In 2019, Tim graduated from Columbia University’s GSAPP. Tim now lives in Harwich Port with his wife and their two daughters.

Matt Coffey

Architect

Matt grew up as a carpenter’s apprentice on the Cape. After graduating from Wentworth’s Architecture program, Matt moved to Martha's Vineyard to work as an architect and become a LEED-AP. In 2010, he and his wife purchased an SMCo net-zero home, where they reside with their two children. In his free time, Matt mountain bikes and serves on the Island Housing Trust Development committee.

Peter D'Angelo

Construction Lead

Pete’s been at SMCo longer than most of us! He joined as a Carpenter in 1992, became a Construction Lead, and then fell into his sweet spot leading our Service and Renovation team for years. He’s cut back these days but keeps a hand in problem-solving a wide variety of service issues, much to our clients' delight.

Jean DaSilva

Carpenter

Jean joined SMCo in 2007, after first working as a roofer on several of our projects. Born and raised on a cattle farm in Brazil—where he once rode broncos on the rodeo circuit—he’s now a key part of our carpentry team and has made a home on Martha’s Vineyard.

Mia Esparini

Bookkeeper & IT Coordinator

Mia grew up between West Tisbury and the Philadelphia suburbs. After trying out big-city living, she returned to the Vineyard in 2019, bringing her young daughter and years of bookkeeping experience with her. The daughter of a woodworker, Mia feels right at home amidst the clatter and aroma of our in-house shop. Beyond SMCo, she’s passionate about bees, baking, and most of all, her family.

Angie Francis

Architect

Angie studied architecture at University of Cincinnati and is a registered architect in Massachusetts. She joined the South Mountain team in 2015, bringing 10 years of high-end residential design and development experience with her. She is known for her passion for modern, regionally appropriate design, and her client relationships. Angie resides in Vineyard Haven with her husband, a fellow architect, and two daughters.

Curtis Friedman

Service and Renovation Lead

Curtis was raised on a farm in rural Connecticut. After college in New Haven, he served one year in the Army and five in the National Guard before pursuing a career in architecture. Somewhere along the way, he realized he was more interested in making than designing. He came to the SMCo in 2003 as a carpenter. When Curtis isn’t leading our Service and Renovation team, he and wife produce MV Sea Salt.

Sebastian Hiatt

Assistant Construction Lead

Sebastian has a passion for making sustainability and craft accessible to everyone. Before his career in construction, Sebastian worked in sustainable agriculture, serving as a FoodCorps Fellow to the NC public schools and a Food System Finance Fellow at Self-Help Credit Union. When not at work, Sebastian can be found with his sweethearts - his wife and three young daughters.

Beth Kostman

Interior Architect

Beth is a registered architect who arrived at South Mountain after 10 years running her own firm. Her focus is lighting, plumbing, appliances, cabinets, and built-ins, as well as comprehensive interior design services, including furniture and fabric selection, window treatments, upholstery, and custom furniture design. A New York City transplant, Beth has lived on Martha’s Vineyard for over 25 years.

Jon Lange

Cabinet Shop Lead

Jon first landed on the Vineyard in 1977 at the age of 19, looking to get aboard the Shenandoah. While waiting for a berth to open up, Steve Sinnett brought him round SMCo. Recognizing his talent, we welcomed Jon in over the next 30 years, whenever his mariner life left him "stuck on the beach.” When Jon decided to quit shipping, he joined us full-time and now leads our Cabinet Shop.

Primo Lombardi

Construction Lead

Primo grew up here on Martha's Vineyard. He first trained as a South Mountain carpenter in the 90s and, after years of travel, we welcomed him back in 2015. When Primo isn't onsite, he enjoys volunteering, being a father to his boys, coaching, and staying grateful for all that life has to offer.

Emily Lowe

Executive Administrator

Growing up on the Vineyard, Emily saw the power of collaborative, community-driven work. After earning a BS in Marketing Communications from Emerson College, she returned home and built her skills in roles that blended customer experience, business management, and creativity. She feels a strong sense of belonging at South Mountain and is eager to keep growing here.

Peggy MacKenzie

Project Manager & Construction Support

Peggy began working for SMCo as a carpenter in 1987, just out of college. She moved from job sites to the shop, where she worked on doors and cabinets, and then into our office, where she provides product support and manages our Service and Renovation team. When not on MV, you can find Peggy on a much smaller island off the coast of Maine.

John Mazza

Electrician & Solar Install Lead

John grew up in Rhode Island, where he spent most of his time on the baseball field. He moved to the island in 2010 and joined our team six years later. Today, John is a licensed electrician and veteran solar installer, leading our installation crew. Off the roof, he resides in an SMCo house down the road and plays every sport imaginable with his wife and three sons.

Abby Melhem

Interior Designer

Abigail grew up in Easton, Pennsylvania, painting alongside her mother in their basement studio. Her love for the arts led her to study Industrial Design at Drexel, where she discovered a passion for furniture and interiors—designing pieces still sold by Urban Outfitters today. After college, she found her place on Martha’s Vineyard as an interior designer at South Mountain. She now lives in Oak Bluffs with her partner, a wooden boat builder, enjoying all the island has to offer.

Rob Meyers

Director of Solar

Rob first visited the Vineyard in 1994, fell in love with the place—and with his future wife—and together they’ve raised four kids on the island. Today, he manages our Solar business, expanding SMCo’s impact, bringing clean energy to more people and places while advancing our values beyond the island. Rob served on the NESEA Board for six years and now leads our membership in the Amicus Solar Cooperative, helping connect our work to a national network of shared learning and innovation.

Siobhán Mullin

Director of Business Operations

Siobhán hails from Athlone, Ireland. Back in 1994, she and her husband made the huge leap from one island to another and landed on Martha’s Vineyard! Siobhán joined us ten years later and has developed into our Director of Business Operations, a key member of the leadership team and one of our most passionate and committed owners. She lives in Vineyard Haven with her family.

Rob Myers

Solar Installer

Rob grew up in Lincoln, Massachusetts, and spent summers on the Vineyard. After studying at Connecticut College, he moved to the island full-time in the 90s, working as a carpenter. His experience roofing and shingling made for a seamless pivot to solar. When he’s not cutting electric bills, you can find Rob out playing music, producing events, and acting in plays. Rob lives in West Tisbury with his partner and two children.

Ane Møller

Cabinetmaker

Born and raised in Denmark, Ane earned her degree as a cabinetmaker from Copenhagen Technical College in 2016. She first joined SMCo as an intern and reclaimed her bench full-time a few years later. Ane brings a modern, Nordic sensibility to our next-generation furniture and cabinetry. She enjoys riding bikes and horses and lives in Oak Bluffs with her husband.

Grace Oslyn

Apprentice Carpenter

Grace was born and raised in Oak Bluffs. She earned her black belt at 13 and graduated with a degree in Tae Kwon Do from the University of Bridgeport. After competing and teaching in the New York area, the Island called her back home. In 2024, she returned to begin a second career and found it wasn’t all that different than her first! Like martial arts, carpentry is a journey, a craft to be honed over a lifetime.

Marc Piland

Apprentice Carpenter

Marc moved to the island with his family in 2008, having vacationed here since birth. After college, he returned to the island, taking on various roles, though he found working with his hands to be the most fulfilling. After three years of raising poultry and farming, his interest shifted toward carpentry, influenced by the experiences of building coops and mobile enclosures. When a local carpenter asked for help working on a project at his home, Marc quickly found a passion for the work and hasn’t stopped since.

Rudy Sanfilippo

Solar Project Manager

Raised on the Vineyard until the age of 12, Rudy studied political science at UC Berkeley before earning his MA in Science at NYU. He specialized in energy, environmental policy, construction, and communications. All of which fit perfectly into becoming a Solar Project Manager at SMCo. Deeply invested in the island community, Rudy serves on the Aquinnah Housing Committee as well as the Dukes County Regional Housing Authority Board.

Sam Shepherd

Architectural Designer

Born and raised in Falmouth, Sam has deep ties to the Cape & Islands. He discovered his passion for the built environment at UMass Amherst, earning a BS in Building Construction Technology, followed by a Master of Architecture from Boston Architectural College. After eight years in commercial architecture in Boston, he returned to Falmouth and found SMCo. He enjoys woodworking and time on the water with family and friends.

Newell Isbell Shinn

Director of Construction

Newell grew up in his family’s timber-frame business, gaining early experience in sales, residential construction, and leadership through challenging times. Today, he oversees all of South Mountain’s construction work. Off the clock, he enjoys time with his wife and son, works with neighbors in Island Cohousing, and enjoys the island's bounty.

Jack Sipperly

Solar Sales

Originally from Rhode Island, Jack spent childhood summers vacationing in the Campground. After graduating from URI with a degree in Environmental Science and Management, he returned to put down more permanent roots, moving into our internship program in 2021. A little while later, he joined SMCo full time! When he isn’t guiding clients through how solar can work for them, he’s surfing the local breaks or wandering the coastline with a bag full of cameras.

Greg Small

Cabinetmeister

Growing up in Connecticut with a love for nature, Greg studied forestry and spent time working in construction and crabbing out in Alaska. He later mastered cabinet making over 14 years before discovering SMCo through an article in Fine Homebuilding. Greg lives in Tisbury with his wife and daughter in a house he built.

Chris Sterry

Cabinetmaker

Chris moved to the island mid-pandemic with his wife and their mischievous mutt. Soon after, their daughter arrived! With an accomplished background in finish carpentry and cabinetry, Chris brings an enthusiasm for high-performance, socially-aware work to South Mountain. When not on the job, you’ll find the self-proclaimed “maker” biking, playing guitar, or scrolling Craigslist for the next tool he didn't know he needed.

Chris Wike

Construction Lead

Originally from upstate New York, Chris studied Forestry and Biology at SUNY ESF. Combining a desire to create with his knowledge of trees led him to timber framing. An opportunity to dismantle an old barn, repair it, and reconstruct it into a brew pub became a catalyst for Revival Timberworks, a small business Chris founded and operated before answering our "call for carpenters" in 2013. He now lives in Vineyard Haven with his wife and two children.

Rachel Wild

Construction Administrator

Rachel was born and raised on Martha’s Vineyard and has a degree in Fashion Merchandising from Fisher College. She loved Boston, but like so many, the call of the island was too great to resist. Rachel returned to Vineyard Haven and found her place at SMCo, where she particularly enjoys working with trade partners. She is involved in all facets of the community, including youth sports, a passion she shares with her son.

Abbie Zell

Communications Coordinator

Abbie began her career as a community organizer, rallying against Virginia’s coal industry and learning the power of a well-told story. Looking for a break, she landed on-island in 2012—and quickly fell for the place and one of its residents. She now lives in West Tisbury with her husband and takes great pride in telling the story of South Mountain.
